Stressed Out

Stress. 88% of Amercans say that this holiday season is the most stressful time of the year. What do you think? 

 

This post is going to highlight some common stressors, ways to recognize stress and burnout and lastly cover 10 ways you can start managing your stress today. 

 

There are four main types of common stressors; physical stress, psychological stress, psychospiritual stress, and psychosocial stress. 

 

Physical stress can include: working too much, trauma, or illness. 

Psychological stress can include: emotional stress, mental stress (like being overworked, or feelings of guilt and shame), or perceptual stress, such as your personal values and beliefs not being expressed within your view of the world.

Psychospiritual stress can include: misalignment within your beliefs and values and the way you are living your life currently, feeling disappointed in not knowing your life purpose.

Psychosocial stress can include: lack of resources, issues within your partnership, or more commonly seen within the COVID-19 Pandemic, isolation. 

 

Once you have defined what area of stress your recurring thoughts fall into, you can then begin to work on a plan to alleviate those stressors. For example, if you have some physical stress and it comes down to working too many overtime hours, what can you do to alleviate that? Can you possibly say no to one or two extra shifts a week for a couple months?

 

Stress can and does manifest differently from one person to the next. Some physical symptoms of stress or burnout can be:

  • Getting frustrated easily
  • Finding it difficult to relax your body and mind
  • Avoiding people
  • Low or decreased energy
  • Frequent headaches
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Ear ringing
  • Excessive worrying
  • Poor decision making
  • Excessive smoking
  • Procrastinating
  • Excessive fidgeting

 

So, once we recognize these signs what can we do about them? Here’s 10 ways to manage stress:

 

  1. Talk about your problems with someone you trust, a life coach, or a therapist.
  2. Deep breathing exercises (check out Youtube for some easy tutorials)
  3. Make time for things that excite you
  4. Exercise
  5. Relax
  6. Take a break. Say no to everything for the rest of the day. 
  7. Find some ways to create balance in your life
  8. Meditate
  9. Get enough sleep. Don’t set an alarm on days you don’t have to., 
  10. Eat a nice, healthy meal.
