Essential Meaning of perseverance

: the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult

Perseverance is what happens when you don’t give up. Now, are we saying “never give up on anything ever or else you’re actually the worst”? No, absolutely not! There is nothing wrong with trying something new, failing at it, and then deciding that it isn’t something you need or want to do or push through to succeed at.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t instances where you don’t want to give up, but you do because the failures just seem to pile up and make you feel bad. Those negative feelings are valid, but they can impact your actions in a negative way, such as giving up on something that you DO care about and later regretting it.

It’s easy to look at someone you admire and their successes and want to be like them. You want that same success for yourself, and this person makes it look so simple! What they aren’t showing you is the journey it took to get to where they are today. Most people who you admire have failed, almost given up, and had tons of rough days to get to where they are.

How can you avoid giving up on those important things you want to accomplish? First, make sure that you have a clear vision of what it is that you want. If your goal is to write a book, think of how you will feel when it’s finished. What types of people is your book going to inspire? What other opportunities open up for you when you publish that book? Think and write for 10 minutes on how completing this will make you feel and where it will put you on your journey to the end goal you have in mind. Are there more pros than cons? If not, rework your goal until it means something to you, and make sure you aren’t just doing it because other people are.

When you do run into a setback, and you will, take a break. Instead of staring at your screen trying to write this book and getting more frustrated, turn the computer off, go take a hot shower and watch your favorite show. You set your own deadlines when it comes to your goals. There’s nothing wrong with turning it off for a few hours or a couple days until you feel inspired again.

Finally, reach out to someone for help! Especially when you’re feeling down about your progress. Share what you’ve done so far, and be proud of your accomplishments, no matter how small you might think they are.
