Overcome Obstacles

Last week, we briefly touched on obstacles that you might face in your life while working towards your personal goals. Now, let’s give you the best tips for overcoming obstacles.

First, what are some common obstacles you might face? Perfection and unrealistic expectations might derail you on your journey. More commonly fear and lack of clarity will pop up and discourage you.

One thing for certain, you will be faced with obstacles no matter what you’re working towards in your life. Here’s how to work with them instead of letting them work against you.

  1. Accept them. Understand that again, there will be obstacles. Embrace them, write them down, and accept them as part of your process. Once you succeed in your goal, those obstacles will only add to your story.
  2. Inspired by DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) STOP. This means Stop, Take a step back, Observe, Proceed. Take the time to look at your situation from the outside instead of trying to fix it with a foggy mind.
  3. Allow your emotions to exist, but don’t allow them to control your behaviors. We are more often to act against our own character when faced with difficulties or obstacles. Follow tip two (STOP) and take the time to process your emotions before getting back on track.
  4. Change it up. This is especially helpful if you keep running into the SAME obstacle over and over again. What are you doing that leads to this negative result? Write down your entire process to see what you could change. For example, you want to publish a book as in our last blog post. You put aside an hour a day to write, but you find that your phone goes off at this time with notifications or calls that aren’t important. This throws you off and at the end of the day you don’t see the progress that you thought you would. In this example, turn notifications off on your phone (if you can) or choose a different time of the day to write.
  5. Accept that you will make mistakes. Let go of perfectionism or your own expectations for this process.
